Brighton & Hove City Council has been challenged to take part in Earth Hour and would like to invite your participation in the global project to turn off lights for one hour, on the same night.

Brighton & Hove, along with more than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2011, sending a powerful message for action on climate change and energy wastage. The message behind Earth Hour is not purely about saving an hour's electricity – it's about people coming together to make a difference not just for an hour a year, but every day.

Brighton & Hove City Council is working towards becoming a One Planet Council and Earth Hour provides us with an opportunity to demonstrate how our collective action can reduce the impact of our activities on our local and global environment and how we can use our resources more effectively.   One Planet approach is based on the idea that if everyone consumed natural resources and generated carbon dioxide at the rate we do in the UK, we would need not one, but three planets to support us in the long term.

What can schools do to get involved?

You can participate in Earth Hour by turning off any unnecessary lighting in and around your school for the hour (or, even better, for the whole weekend). This includes external floodlights, as well as ensuring all internal lights are switched off over the weekend, when the building is not in use. All of the above should only be applied where practicable - the COuncil does not recommend any safety lighting being switched off. We appreciate that Earth Hour is on a Saturday and outside regular school hours and also that some element of lighting is required for security.

If your school would like to sign-up the Council's Sustainability Team would like to hear what you're planning to do! To help them to monitor the impact of Earth Hour please confirm your participation by emailing  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please include the name of your school, your contact details, and a brief description of your plans for Earth Hour.

All participating schools will be entered into a competition to win a free ride on the Brighton Wheel!
